FAQs

What makes you different from other photographers?

I originally trained and qualified as an architect and worked for ten years in small practices on residential projects. I offer architectural photography from an architect’s point of view, resulting in stronger images for your portfolio that actually help you win more work.

How is architectural photography different from property photography?

My job isn’t to capture everything with a wide-angle lens. I strive to communicate the design ethos of a project, by being selective about what is shown and how images are composed. I highlight important details and spatial qualities to create images that work for awards submissions, magazine features, and marketing.

How long does an architectural photography shoot take?

The amount of time needed to capture each project depends on its size, context and complexity. Because I can read projects and understand priorities, the briefing process is quick and straightforward. I arrive knowing what needs to be captured and work efficiently to get the shots that matter.

Can architectural photography help me attract better clients?

Absolutely. Considered photography elevates your projects, showcases your design skills and attracts the right clients - ones who share your values.

There are elements of my project that didn’t turn out as intended. Is it still worth photographing?

As an architect, I’ve been there. There are always aspects of a project that get value-engineered out, or changed against your best advice. I know it can be difficult to see past these missed opportunities, but I approach projects with fresh eyes, and create a set of images that focus on the best attributes and key moves.

Do you provide images suitable for awards submissions and publications?

Yes – I understand the technical requirements for awards submissions and publications. You'll receive high-resolution images that suit editorial use, plus detail shots that showcase craftsmanship.

How do you work with interior designers on residential projects?

I understand the importance of materials, flow, proportion and the cohesion needed make interiors work in the context of their architectural setting. I enjoy working collaboratively with interior designers to highlight these aspects and capture them beautifully.

What's included in your architectural photography service?

An initial briefing call, photography to capture the key aspects and crucial details of a project, post-production of a set quantity of final images and a perpetual image licence are all included within my offering. Every project is different, but I work to an established process that keeps things simple and straightforward for my clients.

Do you offer video services?

Yes, I can offer architectural videography either as a series of clips or as a short film. The footage is captured using a separate dedicated camera, using a motorised camera slider track for orthogonal, deliberate and subtle movements. This can also be combined with footage from the drone if required.

What's the best time to photograph a newly completed residential project?

Timing depends on your goals and the project's orientation. I assess factors like seasonal light quality, garden maturity, and whether dramatic shadows or soft even lighting better suits your design. We can schedule when conditions work for your project – not just when it's convenient.

Can you document the on site process?

Absolutely. I’ve had lots of experience on site - I understand building schedules and construction sequencing and I'm comfortable navigating active building sites safely and professionally. Site photographs can be a great way to document the process and create a consistent set of images throughout a project. This can reinforce a project narrative and create interim content to show clients how you work.

Does my project need to be styled or furnished?

Not necessarily! I usually photograph homes that are lived in, and it’s great to show real spaces complete with their contents - I lightly style/edit on site to suit each composition. I like to include blurred people in some instances to bring life to spaces and demonstrate scale and function. Unfurnished projects can also be photographed, with details that focus on the architectural bones of a project so that empty spaces feel intentional, not incomplete.

How do you handle photography of sensitive or private residential projects?

Discretion is paramount in all private residential work. I’m always conscientious and respectful of clients homes, and am careful to ensure that personal details are never shared. I’m used to working with residential clients and I understand the importance of the relationship you have built with your client. I take time to talk them through my process and understand any concerns or time constraints.

How do you handle photography scheduling around busy residential clients?

I work around your client's schedule, not the other way around. I’m more than happy to coordinate directly with them to ensure minimal disruption.

How do you approach photographing small residential projects or extensions?

Small doesn't mean less important. Some of the strongest images come from modest projects where creative design solutions have been implemented. I know how to make compact spaces feel generous and highlight the clever moves that make small residential projects work beautifully.

What happens if weather conditions aren't ideal on the photography day?

I monitor weather forecasts and understand how different conditions affect architectural photography. Sometimes overcast skies create perfect even lighting for interiors, while dramatic weather can enhance a building's relationship with its landscape. We'll reschedule only if conditions truly don't serve your project.

Can you photograph both daytime and evening shots of residential projects?

Twilight photography showcases artificial lighting design and creates dramatic exterior shots, improving the view of the interior from outside. I anticipate when projects benefit from dusk photography and this can show how your design performs throughout the day.

How do you approach photographing heritage buildings and conservation projects?

I relish opportunities to highlight sympathetic interventions, showcase restored original features, and capture the dialogue between historic fabric and contemporary additions. These projects often need the most nuanced photographic approach.

Do you provide photography for planning or listed building applications?

Yes – I understand the documentary requirements for planning processes. I can visit site to capture existing conditions for archive/record purposes. Technical accuracy is crucial for these applications.

How do you photograph sustainable features and eco-friendly design elements?

Green technology and sustainable materials deserve proper documentation. I can highlight solar shading, natural ventilation, sustainable material choices, and energy-efficient details in ways that communicate environmental benefits to both technical and general audiences.

What's your experience with photographing Passivhaus and low-energy residential projects?

High-performance buildings have unique photographic requirements. I’ve photographed  many certified Passivhaus and EnerPHit projects, and I understand the importance of their detailing and M&E systems. These technical aspects need careful documentation for industry publications and future marketing of your expertise. Site photography can help with these projects, because often these details are hidden upon completion.

Can you coordinate with PR agencies and magazine editors for publication features?

Absolutely. I understand editorial requirements, can provide images in publication-ready formats, and work with your PR team to ensure proper architect and photographer credits. I've worked with magazines and publishers including the RIBA, Architect’s Journal, enki, dezeen, Build-It and Grand Designs Magazine.
